Apple - iPhone 4 - This changes everything. Again.

What do you think? Will it change everything? Change the way we communicate? Eek. I want! Apple has done it again. In some ways, this seems more appealing than the iPad only because the iPad falls into such a weird in between category if you already have a small, lightweight laptop and aren't inclined to read on the subway. I honestly don't know why other companies (Google.. cough cough) bother to compete with Apple in SmartPhones. They're only going to get the hardcore, anti-establishment, non Apple, fans or... Google employees. And from what I've seen, they're just copying the same modern, sleek, minimalist aesthetic without putting their own spin on it. But either way, looks like Apple will always be one step ahead. Even if other Smartphones have better carriers, you can't compete with the brand loyalty and following of Apple. I'm sure it will only take a few years until we forget what it's like to talk with someone on the phone without actually seeing their video or image. Man.. think about that. That's huge. I guess the big question is whether or not our wireless networks can keep up with the flow of data. And so- I ponder.

I love my 3GS which happily upgrades to most of the new software that comes on the latest iPhone. I lust after the iPad but will wait til the next version arrives ... I not long ago mothballed my MacBookPro in favor of a 20 inch iMac all the better for my aging eyes to see/edit my photos on ... and when I travel I have the iPhone and its internet .... so I dont need to schelp a laptop, er, personal computer ...

I'm still not sold on the iPad. Like you, I find it awkwardly in between phone and laptop. However, I'm super happy that the 3Gs will be compatible with OS4 because I've been wanting folders for the iPhone for FOREVER--it's honestly one of THE main reasons I didn't get an iPhone until my last upgrade (and switch of networks because if I was gonna shell out the $$ I wanted the phone I knew I'd keep for more than a year).

I think the video call doesn't change everything unless you look at it from the angle that it doesn't require an app since it's a built-in function. So, I kinda feel like Apple's still got a tiny bit of a big head going on about their products (though I love my phone and iTouch and plan to upgrade/switch platforms to a Mac for my next laptop). It's kinda like how they hyped up the iPad as this super revolutionary device and I was sorely let down because really all they did was tweak one of their existing products to fit on a new physical format and allowed users some functions that the iPhone is already capable of performing but users cannot access. The iPhone has been capable of the new things in OS4 for quite some time but Apple's business model is one of integer upgrades of access to functionability (yeah totally not a word). That still sets my britches afire when I think about it as a consumer but it makes COMPLETE sense as a business model.

It will be nice to have more features on Apple products that are already in place on many non-Apple products. For me, it makes the conversion of platforms easier and less irritating at lack of certain functions. But I think the best thing about what they're bringing to the table with OS4 is the heightened level of productivity for owners. In my eyes, Apple is slowly taking the iPhone from a fun gadget to a true tool. I'm excited to see what comes in the future from these newest building blocks of the foundation.

I think having the iPad and/or the iPhone would be great, but I don't really need them so I won't be getting one anytime soon.
